(iii) W. Uttar Pradesh. The w. part of Uttar Pradesh or the upper Ganga valley must be considered a separate entity in terms of archaeological sequence from the e. part, which properly is bracketed with the middle Ganga valley. Nothing earlier than the Harappa is found in the region. ALAMGIRPUR is the only excavated site, but at sites like BARGAON there is apparently some kind of stratigraphic continuity between the Harappa and the OCW cultures. The latter culture is noticed at many sites including the excavated ones of HASTINĀPURA, ATRANJIKHERA, LAL QILA and SAIPAI. At SAIPAI this pottery is found associated with the Ganga valley Copper Hoards [4.11]. At sites like ATRANJIKHERA a black-and-red ware deposit [4.13] intervenes between the OCW and the PGW, and at places like JAKHERA this constitutes a phase immediately preceding the PGW [4.15]. The latter, the stratigraphic and cultural context of which is still best understood at HASTINĀPURA, and ATRANJIKHERA, continues into the early historical level [4.18.1] characterized by the NBPW [11.16]. The nature of the subsequent historical levels can be appreciated at HASTINĀPURA, PURANA QILA, MATHURA, SANKISA, KANAUJ, AHICCHATRĀ, AYODHYĀ and KAUŚĀMBĪ, but many more settlements lie unmapped and unexplored.
