(iv) E. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The base-line of post-Stone Age occupation in the middle Ganges valley is provided by the excavated Neolithic settlement [4.6.4] at CHIRAND and the succeeding Chalcolithic occupation [4.14.3] has been traced not merely at CHIRAND but also at SONPUR, among others. The Chalcolithic stage is followed by an early Iron Age stage, clearly evidenced again at CHIRAND. Among the early historical sites mention may be made of RĀJGĪR, PĀTALIPUTRA, CAMPĀ, BUXAR, VAIŚĀLĪ, BALIRĀJGARH, PIPRAHWA (GANWARIA), ŚRĀVASTĪ and Kuśinagara. Innumerable contemporary sites must be lying unexplored in this region.
