Excavation at KĀVERĪPAṬṬIṆAM, Dt Thanjavur, the sea-port of the Coḻa kings, brought to light the existence of a wharf. It is an I-shaped structure of kiln-fired brick answering the description of wharfs at Pūhār (Poompuhar) given in the Tamil epic *Paṭṭinappālai*. It consists of two platforms between which runs a channel flanked by two rows of wooden posts meant for anchoring boats. Amphorae [11.19], Coḻa coins with the emblem of tiger, stone beads and Roman coins are among the important finds. [See also KILAYUR.]
