The brick wharf in the now-defunct Rajbandar port in Elephanta island off Bombay is an accidental discovery made in 1973 when a bulldozer uncovered a 3 m thick dėbris sealing the structure. It is a rectangular structure built for handling cargo in the ancient harbour situated between the Stūpa hill and the Cave hill. It is 16 m long, 13 m wide and 3·5 m high and is designed to withstand water-thrust. On the basis of amphora pieces, the Red Polished Ware [11.20] and Kṣatrapa coins found in the contemporary layers and wharf is assigned to the 2nd to the 5th century.
