v1.c5.14

The *Encyclopaedia* has been planned to meet the requirements of the researcher, the professional archaeologist and the general reader. The list of subjects has been carefully chosen to provide background information on as wide a range as possible, avoiding at the same time unnecessary duplication or overlap. For the interested reader, bibliographical notes are given at the end of each article. The scope of the *Encyclopaedia* covers all aspects of Indian archaeology up to the twelfth century. Pakistan and Bangladesh, though parts of the same sub-continent and sharing many cultural mainfestations with India, are not covered. The data drawn are primarily based on published exploration and excavation with reports, evidence about numismatics, epigraphy, sculpture or architecture is excluded.
