In the third zone—Ajay-Kunnur-Ḍamodar, which includes the previously excavated site of PANDU RAJAR DHIBI, BARABELUN and MANGALKOT—the present exploration has shown that the s. bank of the Ajay, especially the stretch of land covered by the Ajay-Kunnur-Khadgiswari-Damodar rivers, was a much lived-in area from Chalcolithic times. Large quantities of painted and unpainted black-and-red ware, microliths and Neolithic celts have been recovered. All along the s. bank of the Ajay and Kunnur and the left bank of the Damodar there are sites which appear to indicate the possibility of a continuous occupation from the Chalcolithic to the historical times. One of the twin mounds at Ara on the Khari, Dt Burdwan, has however only Chalcolithic material—black-and-red ware, cream-slipped ware, black ware and large quantities of red ware.
