INAMGAON on the river Ghod, excavated for ten seasons, is the first Chalcolithic site in Maharashtra which had produced a decadent phase of the Jorwe culture which survived till about 700 B.C. in a poorer form. This evidence has narrowed the gap between the Chalcolithic cultures and the early historical cultures by about three centuries. Pd I at this site represented the Malwa culture and Pd II the Jorwe culture, the latter subdivisible into early Jorwe and late Jorwe. The early Jorwe phase was the most prosperous settlement with large rectangular houses and a rich repertoire of pottery, copper tools and ornaments.
