*4.17.4 Chota Nagpur region*. The Megalithic tradition was a live one in the Chota Nagpur region until very recent times. A village called Chokahatu, Dt Ranchi, contains thousands of tombs, mostly of the dolmen or cromlech form, where burials used to take place as late as the second half of the 19th century. It is usually believed that the Mundas are responsible for this practice which was brought by them from outside India, but this lacks archaeological corroboration.
