Nor have systematic excavations of the c. Indian megaliths been carried out yet, only six sites having so far been excavated. As early as 1891 Carey excavated a few stone circles at KHAIWARA, 24 km w. of Avri in Dt Wardha, which yielded a type of coarse red ware, horse teeth, copper bells, copper ear rings, a gold ring and an iron axe with cross-ring fasteners. In 1879 Rivett-Carnac tapped a few stone circles at JUNAPANI, about 13 km w. of Nagpur, which gave a variety of objects of iron comprising of daggers, flat axes with cross-ring fasteners, hoes, rings or bracelets, horse bits and chisels with long blades and pointed tangs possibly covered with wooden handles. Hunter excavated MAHURJHARI, about 10 km w. of Nagpur, in 1933, but got mostly antiquities of the early historical period as he did not touch the stone circles.
