Interfighting was common among the *janapadas*, till, in the 4th and 3rd centuries B.C., under the Nandas and Mauryas, Magadha (s. Bihar) created for itself a virtually pan-subcontinental empire. This is a matter of history but is reflected in archaeological finds. Taxila, for example, though mostly outside the pale of the archaeological cultures of India, had affinities with them only in the 4th-3rd century B.C. levels.
