SISUPALGARH, under the name Kaliṅganagara, attained the height of its prosperity under Khāravela of the Mahāmeghavāhana dynasty in the 1st century B.C., whose achievements are described in his famous inscription in the UDAYAGIRI(-KHANDAGIRI) hill, not far from Sisupalgarh, where Khāravela and members of his family excavated a number of caves and an apsidal temple for Jaina monks. Born out of the common art tradition of *c.* India, the sculptured friezes of caves have a distinctive flavour of their own in their depth, plasticity and volume.
