*4.19.9 S.-e. Deccan.* By the early decades of this century many Buddhist sites had been brought to light in Andhra, and sporadic excavations at some of them—AMARAVATI, Guntupalli, Jaggayyapeta, Ghantasala, Alluru, Bhattiprolu and a dozen others in coastal Andhra—had resulted in mass collections of sculptures, inscribed slabs, coins, relic caskets [12.8] and the like, without any serious attempt at recording their stratified contexts. In recent years planned excavations at some historical sites like NAGARJUNAKONDA, YELLESWARAM, KESARAPALLE, AMARAVATI, DHARANIKOTA and SALIHUNDAM have enabled us to assess, partially at least, the contents of the later historical cultures.
