In the sub-Himalayan Kashmir basin Lower Palaeolithic tools occur near PAHALGAM in association with the fluvio-glacial deposits laid down partly by the moraine and by the stream. As these deposits are overlain by considerably thick Middle Pleistocene boulder beds into which are cut Upper Pleistocene terraces, the tools suggest a very high antiquity of about half-a-million years and provide proof that man existed in this region prior to the beginning of the maximum cold phase in the Himalayas. The tools occurring on the high terraces in the Jammu area have decidedly no relationship with Pleistocene glaciation.
