In the Hiran valley in Saurashtra, Lower Palaeolithic tools have been discovered in the fluvial gravels underlying the miliolite formation of fluvio-marine origin. This formation, representing a transgressive marine phase, has been tentatively correlated with the well-dated (by ¹⁴C and Uranium-Thorium isotopic method) marine transgression of the last interglacial, i.e. c. 120000 years. Thus it is for the first time in India that the Lower Palaeolithic tools have been definitely proved to be older than 120000 B.P., being possibly of the Middle Pleistocene Age.
