Some tool-bearing gravels contain animal fossils, as in the valleys of the NARMADA, BELAN, GODAVARI, PRAVARA, Krishna, etc., which throw useful light on the palaeo-environment. These gravels usually occur at the base of the section and represent the earliest aggradational deposit. They are covered by a succession of gravels, sands, silts or clays indicating several periods of deposition. The tools of the later period occur in such deposits overlying the basal gravel containing Lower Palaeolithic tools. Fine sections of these deposits are found on the NARMADA, Sabarmati, GODAVARI, PRAVARA, etc.
