In the SINGRAULI basin in Uttar Pradesh, particularly on the Rihand river and the Bichi Nala, more or less similar stratigraphy has been noticed. The choppers found here were once considered to be of Sohan variety, indicating this region as a sort of meeting place of the n. Sohan culture and the s. handaxe culture. This view however is no longer tenable. Recently very interesting Palaeolithic sites have been discovered in the BELAN valley in Dt Allahabad, where a succession of sediments has been worked out: the lowest highly cemented gravel has yielded Lower Palaeolithic tools comprising pebble tools, handaxes and cleavers. Besides, this gravel also contains animal fossils which may be of the Middle Pleistocene age.
