v1.c9.s2.24

No Lower Palaeolithic cave sites are known in India, but tools occur in several rock-shelters in the Vindhyan hills in c. India. Of them the largest group is at BHIMBETKA and a few near ADAMGARH, respectively on the n. and s. banks of the NARMADA near HOSHANGABAD. A complete sequence of cultures from the Lower Palaeolithic through the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic and the Mesolithic (and in some places even the Chalcolithic) has been uncovered in the excavations conducted in these shelters.
