v1.c9.s3.10

The flake-tool character of this culture enables us to compare it broadly with the Levallois-Mousterian cultures of w. Asia, the Mousterian culture of w. Europe and the Middle Stone Age cultures of Africa. Sankalia particularly emphasizes the typological similarities between the Indian and w. European industries. Basing on these similarities and also other features like the use of new raw materials and occurrence of sites in the intermediate regions, e.g. Teshik-Tash in c. Asia and the Sanghao cave in Pakistan, he postulates that the culture was introduced into the country from w. Europe via w. and c. Asia. But one cannot completely rule out the probability of a local development from the handaxe-cleaver industries, more particularly in regions like the BELAN valley of Uttar Pradesh which have revealed an elaborate succession of cultures.
