4.3.6 *S. region.* The flake industry reported from the Kortalayar basin near Madras seems to contain Mousterian features (Krishnaswami, 1938). The s.most extension of the Middle Palaeolithic culture of the Indian subcontinent is marked by a group of sites, situated on the Vagai and Maratta basins in Dt Madurai. The important locality of the region is T. PUDUPPATTI, which has yielded implements made of fine-grained siliceous stones (*IAR 1960-1*, p. 18). The assemblage has perhaps unique typological features, for along with scrapers made on flakes and points shouldered arrowheads were also discovered. Besides, the collection is said to be devoid of the Levallois element.
