v1.c9.s7.22
The recognizes (1) a Sothi-Kot Diji complex; (2) an internal evolution in the complex as a result of natural calamities, giving rise to 'leaders' who erected citadels for themselves, producing the twin-mound aspect of the Harappa settlements; and (3) the rise of a merchant class which rapidly transformed the society into the typical Harappa culture. Gupta adds that this process of transformation began in the Ghaggar-Hakra basin, which abounds in Sothi/Kalibangan I/early Harappa sites more than in any other region.
