Excavations conducted by the Directorate of Arch. and Museums, Bihar, for seven seasons between 1962-3 and 1972-3. (*IAR 1962-3*, p. 6; *1963-4*, p. 6; *1964-5*, p. 6; *1968-9*, p. 5; *1969-70*, p. 2; *1970-1*, p. 6; *1971-2*, p. 6) revealed five broad cultural Pds, viz. Pd I (Neolithic) Pd II (Chalcolithic), Pd III (NBPW culture), Pd IV (Ist century B.C. to 3rd century A.D.), and Pd V (late historical).
