v2.c42.71
At present the area of ancient habitations has been partly disturbed and several mounds are under occupation. Hundreds of antiquities like coins, moulds, terracottas and pottery come up everyday in casual digging and river-bed clearance. This has resulted in the building up of several private collections. The ancient site spreads well ove 4 sq km. Some areas are still called by legendary names, as for instance the Nāga-ghāṭ. There is also another area which is supposed to contain the remains of the palace of king Sātavāhana, though no corroboration is as yet available. Some mounds rise as high as 18 m above the present water level of the Godavari.
