Caṣāla, the mortar-shaped top-piece of the sacrificial post (Yūpa), is mentioned from the Rigveda onwards.¹ In one passage of the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa² it is directed to be made of wheaten dough (*gaudhūma*).
