In the ninth year the Buddha is at Kosambi. While on a visit to the Kuru country he is offered in marriage Māgaṇḍiyā, the beautiful daughter of the brahmin Māgaṇdiya. The refusal of the offer, accompanied by insulting remarks about physical beauty, arouses the enmity of Māgaṇḍiyā who, thenceforward, cherishes hatred against the Buddha.⁴²
