Legends and traditions which refer the custom to Gorakhnāth are numerous. It is said that Śiva ordered Pārvatī to split Gorakhnāth’s ears¹ and that thus the practice arose. Again, Karkāī and Bhuskāī received consent from their guru, Gorakhnāth, to split each other’s ears.² The agreement was made at a place on the road to Hiṅg Lāj, a shrine which every perfect Yogī must visit. Gorakhnāth is said to have split Bhartri’s ears.²
