After a year (bārsī), or a year and a half, the śrāddha, or funeral rite is performed.⁴ The Yogīs keep vigil all night and in some places the ceremony known as bharad, the beating of drums for Devī, is kept up. In the watch before dawn fish, or pakāuṛī, or khīr, or palāu or flesh is distributed. Six or seven thrones (gaddi) are erected; to the pīr, to Joginīs, to Śākhya (or witness), to Bīr, to Dhandārī (cook of Guru Gorakhnāth), to Gorakhnāth and to Neka or Ant (reported at Almora). Mantras are recited, clothes and coins of gold, silver and copper are distributed, and a cow or some other gift is made to the pīr. Gifts are made also to Yogīs. The silver goes to Śākhya, copper to Bīr, the cow to the pīr, water to Gorakhnāth.
