Initiation is divided, roughly, into two stages:⁶ the first, a probationary period, followed by ceremonies leading to preliminary discipleship; the second, during which the ceremony of splitting the ears, which leads to full membership in the sect, is performed. An initiate in the first stage is called an Āughar; in the second stage he becomes a full-fledged Yogī.
