There are at least four different schemes of division in the principal Sanskrit treatises. The Pr. Pā. Ṣata., the Mahā-vastu and the Da. Bhū. describe ten bhūmis in different ways, and the Bodhisattva-bhūmi speaks of seven bhūmis and thirteen vihāras. Candrakīrti's Madhyamakāvatāra is not available in Sanskrit and cannot therefore be utilised as one of the sources for this essay.
