C. THE BEGINNING OF MAHĀYĀNA, or as Rosenberg puts it, the period of conflict between Hinayāna and Mahāyāna.¹ The sources for this period are mainly the Prajñāpāramitās, the Saddharma Puṇḍarīka, the Daśabhūmikasūtra, the Gaṇḍavyūha, the Laṅkāvatāra as also the works of Nāgārjuna, Aśvaghoṣa, Asaṅga and others so far as they throw light on the relative position of Hinayāna and Mahāyāna.
