The former opinion is opposed in the *Kvu.* (XVIII. 32: *Natthi Buddhasa Bhagavato karuṇā ti*) on the ground that the Buddha is described in the texts as ‘kāruṇiko’ and that he sometimes enters into mahākaruṇāsāmāpatti and so he has karuṇā for sentient beings. In the Pāli texts, the practice of four brahmavihāras: maitrī, karuṇā, muditā and upekkhā form an essential part of the Theravāda code of spiritual practice. It is by means of brahmavihāras that an adept is able to look upon all beings as one and the same, in other words, develops samatājñāna.
