(731) Since sīla or 'virtue' is a prior requirement for the development of samādhi or 'concentration' (*v. supra*, 728), a causal relationship is established between sīla and paññā (wisdom). This explains the saying that 'wisdom becomes brighter with conduct' (apadāne sobhati paññā, A. I.102) and also the statement that 'wisdom is cleansed by virtue and virtue is cleansed by wisdom—where there is virtue there is wisdom and where there is wisdom there is virtue' (sīlaparidhotā ... paññā paññāparidhotam sīlam yattha sīlam tattha paññā yattha paññā tattha sīlam. D. I.124).
