As Jacobi points out, in the commentary on the Uttarādhyayana Sūtra (18.23), it is said that the Sceptics (Ajñānavādinaḥ) 'contend that knowledge is not necessary for salvation but *tapas*'¹ is, and Jacobi commenting on this says that 'this seems identical with the karmapatha'.
