Though the expression has the sanction of long usage behind it, it appears to have been not known in ancient times. This is clear from the fact that in the enunciation of the various branches of literature which a seeker after truth was advised to study, there is no mention of the ‘six darśanas’; and also it does not occur in the list of the several ‘vidyāsthānas,’ subjects of learning, provided by the Ancients.
