The wonders connected with the conception and birth of the Bodhisatta are detailed in the Acchariyabahutasutta of the “Majjh. Nikâya” (cf. “Mahâparinibbâna Sutta,” p. 27); there the law is laid down as universally valid, that the mother dies seven days after the birth of the child, and is born again in the heaven of the Tusita deities; also the so-called Sîhanâda (“aggo 'ham asmi lokassa,” &c., cf. “Jât. Atth.” i, p. 53) is there mentioned. The presentation of the child to the Rishi Asita (or as he is named in the “Jât. Atth.” i, p. 54, Kâladevala) is narrated in the just-mentioned Nâlakasutta of the Sutta Nipâta† (v. Fausböll's translation).
