The texts frequently refer to posthumous retaliation for defects of character. In Ṭhāṇ. 274a we seem to be concerned with such of a monk, since *avaddhamsa* "apostasy" presupposes the prescribed good conduct. After the mental disposition (*bhāvanā*, Sthān.) inderlying it or after the reward to be expected in the future existence the *av.* is called either as *āsura*, *abhiog(iy)a*, *sammoha* or a *deva-kibbis(iy)a*, expressions reflecting the names of lower classes of gods (§ 134). The remarks, however, saying what defects—along with occupations and performances like *nimitt’ājivaya*, *bhūi-kamma*, *kouya-karaṇa*—will result in what forms of existence generally refer to the *jīva* and not exclusively to the monk. Acc. to Viy. 49a the reward in the shape of either a higher or lower heavenly existence is listed in a sequence strangely composed of spiritual and temporal conceptions and placing next to those of a more or less disciplined character (samjama, § 177) the asannī, tāvasa, kandappiya, caraga-parivvāya-yaga, kibbisiya, tericchiya, ājīviya, and ābhiogiya.
