¹ Dr. D. R. Bhandarkar, I think, first pointed this out. It used to be translated “set out for enlightenment”, or even “arrivé à la vraie intelligence”; cf. Przyluski, *Le Bouddhisme*, p. 25. The inscriptions recording Asoka’s visit to Buddha’s birthplace and to the stupa of the previous Buddha Konākamana are extant, but as they were “discovered” by the forger A. Führer, they are suspect. Führer also claimed to have discovered the stupa itself, but no one else has ever seen it.
