The death of Pius IV in 1565 was followed by the election of Pius V, a man of a very different character. He was a Dominican, and he had been a member of the Inquisition. He was a man of austere life and of great zeal for the reform of the Church. He enforced the decrees of the Council of Trent with great severity, and he did much to purify the Church from the abuses which had crept into it. He was also a great patron of the arts, and he did much to beautify the city of Rome. He died in 1572, and he was succeeded by Gregory XIII, who is best known for the reform of the calendar which bears his name.
