The discussion shows that Āryabhaṭa I (496 A. D.) first obtained a general solution of the problem by = ax ± c. But Āryabhaṭa I himself admitted that he was discussing the knowledge current in Kusumpura (founded in the 1st century B. C.). Further we find that the Indian interest began during the time of *Śulbasūtras*. The process thus has a long history behind it and did not appear all of a sudden in a fully developed form. The subject of *Kuṭṭaka* was considered among the Indian mathematicians as an important branch of their algebra.
