According to the Buddhist texts, an important route led south-west from Sāvatthi (Srāvasti) to Patiṭṭhāna, (Prathiṣṭāna) with six halts and frequent crossing of rivers. The Vinaya texts mention boats going up the Ganges to Sahajati and up the Yamuna to Kausāmbi. According to the Jātaka tales, there were no bridges, but only forting places and ferries for crossing rivers.
