Much can be known about the furniture from the Jaina and Buddhist literatures. In Jaina literature we come across furniture articles like rich beds, cushions, pillows, chairs etc. Among the marriage gifts mention has been made of Pāviḍha (foot-stool), Bhisiyā (seat), Pallankāya (couches) and Paḍisijjā (sofa). Various kinds of chairs like swan chairs, heron chairs, eagle chairs, tall chairs (oṇaya), sloping chairs (paṇaya), long chairs, fine chairs (bhadda), winged chairs (pakkha), crocodile chairs, lotus chairs, and Disāsovatthiya chairs are mentioned (Jain, J.C, 1947, p.157).
