Taxila was the meeting ground of indigenous craftsmanship and successive waves of foreign influences: Persian, Greek, Scythians, Parthians, Kuṣāṇas and Sassanids (Table 14.1). Under the Mauryas and the Guptas, the city assimilated the foreign styles and produced artefacts reflecting a synthetic culture. The synthetic traditions based upon the Hellenistic culture spread to far-away cities such as Mathurā, Ujjain, Vidiśā and Pāṭaliputra.
