v1.c27.2
Further developments in ancient India were noted in chapter 14 which records Taxila of the first century AD producing iron swords and adzes containing 1.2-1.7 per cent carbon. During this century, certain Gujarat sites like Dhatwa and Shamalaji produced iron for domestic and overseas consumption. The Roman trade with India had started; *Periplus of the Erythrean Sea* (second century AD) recorded that ‘*sideros indikos kai stomoma*’ or ‘Indian iron and steel’ used to be shipped from the inland part of Ariake or the gulf of Cambay area.
