V.S. Agrawala (1953:471) observed that the śatamāna was mentioned only in the later date kāṇḍas (12-14) of Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa associated with the name of Yājñavalkya, and therefore most possibly the coin was introduced in the later phase of the Brāhmaṇa era (c. eight to fifth century BC).
