v2.c40.3

The scholars who prefer the later dates presume that Pāṇini’s work has not been touched or amended by his followers. This assumption may not be perfectly valid. At least in one case we find that the reference to the Kedara gold coin (Pāṇ. 5.2.120) corresponds to the post-Christian era and therefore could hardly have been made by Pāṇini himself. We may conclude that Pāṇini lived around 500 BC near the ancient city of Takṣaśilā or Taxilā after this was founded under the Achaemenid influence.
