v1.c25.205

The passage in prose (9.45) lists women to be avoided, improper times for intercourse, and some rules for the male partner. The verses formulate rules to be observed by the male preceding intercourse (9.46–47), the frequency of cohabitation during the various seasons (9.48ab), the proper behaviour of the male after intercourse (9.48cd–49), the beneficial results of these practices when duly observed, and the bad effects of neglecting them (9.50–51). The disorders resulting from too much sex are enumerated (9.52–53); the age limits (sixteen and seventy years) of sexual activity are mentioned (9.54). The good results of complying with the rules and the bad ones of not heeding them end this section (9.55–59).
