v3.c47.119
The date of the Hastyāyurveda cannot be determined with any certainty. The quotations by Kṣīrasvāmin prove that some version of the work is earlier than the first half of the twelfth century. The terminus ante quem would be shifted to the end of the eighth century if the Gaṅga king Śivamāra, author of a Gajāṣṭaka, was acquainted with the whole treatise. 700 The Hastyāyurveda is later than the Caraka- and Suśrutasaṃhitā, because its structure betrays the influence of these classics. 701
