**Vyākaraṇa.** *Vyākaraṇa* or Grammar was the third subject developed. The foundation was already laid in the *Padapāṭhas* which distinguish parts of compounds, prefixes of verbs and suffixes and terminations of nouns, in a word, the four parts of speech. The most important information regarding pre-Pāṇinean grammar is to be derived from Yāska's work.
