**Kauṭilya’s ‘Arthaśāstra’.** The conditions of education in the Sūtra period are very clearly, if somewhat succinctly, indicated in that famous work, the *Arthaśāstra* of Kauṭilya, which is now regarded almost unanimously by all scholars as the work of the minister of the emperor, Chandragupta Maurya. Kauṭilya indicates the entire circle of the then knowledge as being made up of four divisions called (1) *Ānvīkshakī*, (2) *Trayī*, (3) *Vārtā*, (4) *Daṇḍanīti*. Each of these divisions comprises a number of subjects or sciences.
