v4.c14.2

Volume four of Series A of the *Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit* contains articles on authors whose names begin with labials (*p, ph, b, bh,* and *m*). These are preceded by material supplemental to volumes one (Memoirs of the American Philosophical Society, vol. 81, Philadelphia, 1970), two (Memoirs of the American Philosophical Society, vol. 86, Philadelphia, 1971), and three (Memoirs of the American Philosophical Society, vol. 111, Philadelphia, 1976). This material consists of abbreviations of new periodicals and serials that have been consulted (p. 2), a bibliography of books and articles that have been noticed since volume three went to press (pp. 3–7), and a list of additional catalogs that it has been possible to utilize (p. 8). For additions to the bibliographical section I am deeply indebted to R. C. Gupta of Ranchi and to A. Volodarsky of Moscow. I regret that the unavailability of many Indian periodicals has resulted in omissions from the bibliography. I have been able to supplement my knowledge of the manuscripts in the Chandra Shum Shere collection of the Bodleian Library by personal inspection of about 500 manuscripts during a stay in Oxford in the spring of 1976 supported by the Guggenheim Foundation and another in June, 1978 supported by the Bodleian Library, and many microfilms of manuscripts at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine have been supplied to me through the generosity of the Director and the kind intervention of the Curators of Oriental Manuscripts, Marianne Winder and Nigel Allan.

v4.c14.3

The present volume contains additional information on about 320 authors noticed in the previous volumes in this series, and articles on 1,000 new authors; the total number of authors treated now stands at about 2,450. Among these will be found many whose works fall primarily in the categories of prayoga or dharma, but who deal more or less extensively with the determination of the proper times for performing ritual or other acts. As my knowledge of these fields expands, undoubtedly others will be identified for inclusion in future volumes of *CESS*; I suspect another large group will be revealed by a thorough examination of tantric texts, which I hope eventually to undertake. A work such as this can never be complete; I can only hope that it is useful.
