v2.c35.84

For the definition of an Upádhi, vide Sríharsha and Udayana: व्याप्तिसाधनी यः साध्यसमव्याप्तिः उच्यते स उपाधिरिति। Hence to avoid an Upádhi (which is साध्यसमव्याप्तिः), the constant presence of anything relevant other than the sign and the signate in the positive instances (of agreement in presence, अन्वय), and the constant absence of any such thing in the negative instances (of agreement in absence, व्यतिरेक) must be safe-guarded against. This amounts to Mill's Joint Method.
